As a physician, medical policy expert, and public health advocate, Dr. Scott Gottlieb brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to his new role as Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). During his plenary remarks at The MedTech Conference, Dr. Gottlieb discussed some of the FDA’s recent achievements, its current priorities and potential opportunities for further regulatory innovation.

Selected by an onsite vote of almost 1,500 conference attendees, Boston-based company Day Zero Diagnostics was chosen as the winner of the 2017 MedTech Innovator Global Competition. Through combining genome sequencing and machine learning to battle antimicrobial resistant infections, Day Zero Diagnostics is allowing physicians to shift from broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy to a targeted antibiotic in hours instead of days.

Every day, innovative medical technologies make a positive difference in the lives of patients worldwide, but serious barriers often keep the world’s most economically challenged populations from ever seeing those technologies or their benefits. That is why The MedTech Conference added a new Innovations in Global Health Program, aimed at identifying ways to accelerate innovation and support the deployment of affordable and appropriate medical technologies in the developing world. As part of that program, TEAMFund and MedTech Innovator teamed up to present the Global Health Innovator Award to an innovative startup addressing global health needs: Shift Labs.

As we’ve seen throughout the course of this year’s The MedTech Conference, ongoing innovation across the industry is both widespread and abundant. With all of the advancements in medical technology and even more groundbreaking developments underway, there is no question that collaboration among entities across the industry can be more impactful in helping facilitate better patient outcomes.

This week, several of my colleagues and I are at AdvaMed’s annual MedTech Conference where we are discussing a wide range of topics, including value-based contracting, cybersecurity, and digital health. Earlier today, I led a panel focused on the decline of early-stage investment in medtech, and its impact on startup activity. During the session, we dove into how dwindling investments in those early phases could put future innovation at risk. We also discussed potential strategies for attracting new medtech investors.  

As the medical technology landscape continues to rapidly evolve, new vehicles for innovation are taking center stage, ranging from big data and artificial intelligence to cognitive learning. Separating all the information around these new technologies and understanding the realities of the implications they hold for the industry has never been more important. In particular, the role that innovation can play in refocusing conversations around the patient experience and patient engagement is critical.
